Chinese Herbal Medicine
The Oriental Healing Clinic maintains an extensive herbal pharmacy of over 200 different herbals in both raw form and granular as well as an extensive selection of patent medicines, tinctures, and topical medication. The herbs and products within the pharmacy have been selected on the basis of quality and purity to ensure the highest standard of care for patients.
Raw Herb Pharmacy
A raw herbal decoction consists of individually weighed unprocessed herbs place together to form one bag of ‘formula.’ One bag is boiled to make either one to six days worth of medicinal liquid. This is the strongest form of herbal medicine; it offers flexibility to the practitioner to customize the formula to the patients specific needs.
Also available are powdered raw herbal formulas, which are assembled to meet the specific needs of the patient. The powdered herbs can then be taken as a decoction after boiling or in powdered form either mixed with warm water or in capsules. In this case the preparation time for the patient is reduced yet access to the strength of the unprocessed herbs is obtained.
Granular Herb Pharmacy
These are herbs that undergo an extraction process whereby the end result is a concentrated powder that is also consumed in hot water. The end product has an extraction ratio of anywhere from 1:1 to 10:1 depending on the herb or formula (a 5:1 ratio starts with 5 lbs of herbs and yields 1 lb. of granular). The goal of granulars is to mimic bulk herbal decoctions as best as possible.
Tinctures
These are alcohol and water extracts of raw herbal formulas. These are convenient and effective; there are certain situations where a tincture is the most effective method of treatment.
Patent Medicine
These are famous formulas used for generations from common illnesses. They are tiny herbal pellets, referred to as tea pills, which are taken two or three times a day. Taking herbs in this form is sometimes more convenient for the patient as they require no preparation. However, they are pre-formulated, so they may not match a specific situation.
Topical’s (liquids, creams, salves, pastes, plasters)
These preparations involve the external application of the herbs; there are numerous circumstances where these are most effective.
